What are arm templates used for?

Declarative syntax: ARM templates allow you to create and deploy an entire Azure infrastructure declaratively. For example, you can deploy not only virtual machines, but also the network infrastructure, storage systems, and any other resources you may need.

ARM templates are JSON files that define the resources you need to deploy for your solution. To understand the concepts associated with deploying and managing your Azure solutions, see template deployment overview. The same process can be used to deploy other Azure resources.

Benefits of ARM are:

• User can spun up a JSON template which includes instructions for creating all the resources and build a resource group (example: VM, storage, database, and network) in real time.
• Managing JSON templates is simpler than managing XML templates.

Azure Resource Manager (ARM) is the native platform for infrastructure as code (IaC) in Azure. It enables you to centralize the management, deployment, and security of Azure resources. You can use ARM to deploy assets from multiple Azure resource provider services, such as Microsoft Storage and Microsoft Compute.

ARM stands for Azure Resource Manager, which is Microsoft’s deployment and management service for Azure. You use the ARM management layer for creating, updating, and deleting Azure resources.

ARM VM Comparison. Azure Classic and Azure Resource Manager (ARM) are two different deployment models for Azure VMs. In the classic model, resources exist independently, without groups for applications. In the classic deployment model, resource states, policies, and tags are all managed individually.

There are also two different ARM template deployment modes: incremental and complete. Both deployment modes provide different capabilities, with one being more destructive than the other.

When deploying an ARM template, you can give the deployment a name. This name can help you retrieve the deployment from the deployment history. If you don’t provide a name for the deployment, the name of the template file is used.

Deploying an ARM Template using Incremental Mode. Next, change the “name” property in the ARM template to “vnetB” as well as the “addressPrefixes” to “192.168.2.0/24”. Re-run my PowerShell deployment command from above, and Azure will perform an incremental deployment.
