Can you access SQL Express remotely?

By default SQL Express does not accept any remote connections. You won’t be able to connect to it with SQL Management Studio, or an ODBC connection for example until you enable it to accept connections.

Connect to a Remote SQL Server

1. Right-click the on the SQL Server instance name and select Properties.
2. Select Connections on the left-hand pane.
3. Under Remote Server Connections, check the box against “Allow remote connections to this server”.
4. Leave the default value for the Remote query timeout to 600.
5. Click OK.

1. Start SQL Config Manager: Click Start -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 -> SQL Server Configuration Manager.
2. Start SQL Services: Set the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Browser services to automatic start mode. Right-click each service -> Properties -> Go into the Service Tab.

To configure the database connection in Ignition Select Databases > Connections from the menu. Click on Create new Database Connection. Select Microsoft SQL Server JDBC Driver and click Next. Set the username and password to a valid SQL authentication user.

4. Next to Computer: type in the IP address of your server.
5. Click Connect.
6. If all goes well, you will see the Windows login prompt.

To connect to the Database Engine from another computer

1. On a second computer that contains the SQL Server client tools, log in with an account authorized to connect to SQL Server, and open Management Studio.
2. In the Connect to Server dialog box, confirm Database Engine in the Server type box.

In most cases, you can connect by entering the computer name of the database server in the Server name box and then clicking Connect. If you’re connecting to a named instance, use the computer name followed by a backslash, and then the instance name. For example, mycomputer/myinstance .

1. In SQL Server Management Studio, open Object Explorer and expand the folder of the server instance in which to create the new login.
2. Right-click the Security folder, point to New, and then click Login.
3. On the General page, enter a name for the new login in the Login name box.
4. Select SQL Server Authentication.

Step 3: Connect to a Local MySQL Server Enter mysql.exe -uroot -p , and MySQL will launch using the root user. MySQL will prompt you for your password. Enter the password from the user account you specified with the –u tag, and you’ll connect to the MySQL server.

Go to Start > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Configuration Tools. Locate the running MS SQL Server instance name (circled below in red).

Last time, I wrote an article show how to enable remote connection on SQL Server 2005 Express. Now SQL Server 2008 Express is released for a while, it doesn’t allow remote connection on default installation as on SQL Server 2005 Express. So you have to enable it manually.

Note: In SQL Server 2008 Express, there isn’t SQL Server Surface Area Configuration so you have to configure from SQL Server Configuration Manager instead. Open SQL Server Configuration Manager. Click Start -> Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 -> Configuration Tools -> SQL Server Configuration Manager.

To test remote connectivity: 1 Open SQL Server Management. 2 In the Connect to Server dialog type in the name of the server. 3 Click Connect. 4 If the tool is already open, in the Object Explorer window, click the Connect icon.

On the left window, select SQL Server Services. Select SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) on the right window -> click Restart. The SQL Server service will be restarted. Open Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and connect to the SQL Server 2008 Express. Right-click on the SQL Server Instance and select Properties.
