How to restart your Windows computer

Reboots can be either cold (alternatively known as hard), in which the power to the system is physically turned off and back on again causing an initial boot of the machine, or warm (or soft) in which the system restarts without the need to interrupt the power.

Hard reboot is a reboot as if you switched off and on your VM from power. Soft reboot is like a “reboot” command from the command prompt.

Open Start Menu, and search and open Settings. In the Settings app, find and select Update & security. Select Recovery. Select Go back to Windows 7 or Go back to Windows 8.1. Select Get started button, and it will revert your computer to an older version.

To restart the remote computer, click the Start button and enter this command in the search box: shutdown /r /t 0. The /r switch tells the machine to reboot and the /t option sets the number of seconds to execute the command. Since we set /t to zero, the restart should initiate immediately.
