How does the sendinput function in Win32 work?

Applications are permitted to inject input only into applications that are at an equal or lesser integrity level. The SendInput function inserts the events in the INPUT structures serially into the keyboard or mouse input stream.

This function does not reset the keyboard’s current state. Any keys that are already pressed when the function is called might interfere with the events that this function generates. To avoid this problem, check the keyboard’s state with the GetAsyncKeyState function and correct as necessary.

This function is subject to UIPI. Applications are permitted to inject input only into applications that are at an equal or lesser integrity level. The SendInput function inserts the events in the INPUT structures serially into the keyboard or mouse input stream.

This function fails when it is blocked by UIPI. Note that neither GetLastError nor the return value will indicate the failure was caused by UIPI blocking. This function is subject to UIPI. The following example uses The Win API function SendInput (and VkKeyScan) to simulte a user pressing Windows+R followed by notepad (so as to start notepad) and then pressing enter and then someText. This example needs the VBA declarations of the Windows API which can be found here.

Select visual C++ from the left side of the screen, and select Empty Project from the middle section of the screen. At the bottom of the window you can give the project a name, and then click OK to create the new project. Right click Source File on the right hand side of the screen, Click Add, then click Add New Item. This will open a new window.

When working locally, with a Web API project in the same solution as a client project that will use that API, it is handy to also set the Web API project to generate the OpenAPI specification document on build. This way, a solution build results in a new OpenAPI file being generated at build-time and the client getting generated at the same time.
