Creating and Using a Multiple-Response Set in SPSS

1. Open the Apples and Oranges.
2. Choose Analyze→Multiple Response→Define Variable Sets.
3. In the Set Definition list, select each variable you want to include in your new multiple dataset, and then click the arrow to move the selections to the Variables in Set list.

SPSS has a two-step process to use multiple response sets using the dialog windows:

1. Define the multiple response set. Identify the variables representing the values for that set. Indicate which number code(s) should be counted as “present”.
2. Run the multiple response frequencies or crosstabs procedures.

Defining Multiple Response Sets

1. From the menus, choose: Data > Define Multiple Response Sets…
2. Select two or more variables.
3. Enter a unique name for each multiple response set.
4. Enter a descriptive label for the set.
5. Click Add to add the multiple response set to the list of defined sets.

Select cases: Range

1. From the menus choose: Data > Select Cases…
2. Select Based on time or case range.
3. Click Range.

For questions with only one correct answer, use “Multiple Choice.” For questions where you want the student to select more than one correct answer, use “Multiple Answer.”

Using the Multiple Responses

1. Click in the menubar on Analyze.
2. Click on Crosstabs.
3. Click on the multiple response set and move it to the Row(s)
4. Click on the variable you want to cross with and move it to the Column(s)
5. Click on Define Ranges.
6. Specify the range of codes for the values you want to show.
7. Click on Continue.

Multiple response sets use multiple variables to record responses to questions where the respondent can give more than one answer. You can copy multiple response sets from other IBM SPSS Statistics data files using Copy Data Properties, which is accessed from the Data menu in the Data Editor window.

There’s no point in including more than 3 predictors in or model. The Sig. F Change column confirms this: the increase in r-square from adding a third predictor is statistically significant, F (1,46) = 7.25, p = 0.010. Adding a fourth predictor does not significantly improve r-square any further.
