Over time, more and more files become fragmented. You cannot work on your computer and defrag your computer at the same time. It is common for disk defragmenter to take a long time. The time can vary from 10 minutes to many hours, so run the Disk Defragmenter when you don’t need to use the computer!

To have your computer run more efficiently, use the built-in tool in Windows to defragment those files. Here’s how and when you should do it. Windows 10, like Windows 8 and Windows 7 before it, automatically defragments files for you on a schedule (by default, once a week).

Over time, the data blocks (fragments) that make up files can become scattered in multiple locations around the surface of the hard disk. This is called fragmentation. Defragmenting moves all of those blocks so they are located close together in physical space, which potentially speeds up read times when accessing data on the disk.

Click Defragment disk if your computer instructs you to defragment. The defrag process can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours to complete depending on the state of your disk drive.

Keep in mind, you must not defrag Windows 10 if you are using a solid state drive( SSD ). SSD is built on a different technology than mechanical HDD. SSDs have limited read/write count and regular defragmentation will further decrease its lifespan. So you should absolutely NOT defrag Windows 10 if you are using an SSD.

To run Defrag from Windows, follow the steps below. Click Start. Click Run and type Defrag in the run box. Click Ok. In the Defrag window, select the drive that you want to be checked and click Ok.

1 Answer. You can safely stop Disk Defragmenter, so long as you do it by clicking the Stop button, and not by killing it with Task Manager or otherwise “pulling the plug.” Disk Defragmenter will simply complete the block move it is currently performing, and stop the defragmentation.
