Is the Windows old folder necessary?

old folder is where the old system files store after upgrading your copy of Windows 10’s version. This folder is important when you decide to rollback to the previous version but it will be automatically deleted after 10 days. If you’re already satisfied with your recent upgrade, then you can definitely delete it.

Windows. old is a backup of the system you just updated in case something goes wrong with the upgrade. If you find the new system doesn’t work or you don’t like the state of things after it’s complete, you can just roll it back using Windows 10’s built in roll back feature.

Files and settings stored in the Users or Documents and Settings subfolders of Windows.old (including the default My Documents folder in Windows XP) might still be available in Windows.old after 28 days, but other files, including Windows installation files, will be deleted.

However, if you need to free up disk space, and you’re confident that your files and settings are where you want them to be in Windows 10, you can safely delete it yourself. Keep in mind that you’ll be deleting your Windows.old folder, which contains files that give you the option to go back to your previous version of Windows.

While it’s safe to delete the Windows.old folder, if you remove its contents, you will no longer be able to use the recovery options to rollback to the previous version of Windows 10. If you delete the folder, and then you want to rollback, you’ll need to perform a clean installation with the desire version.

If you’re completely happy with the way your Windows upgrade or update has panned out, then you don’t need to worry about Windows.old. It will delete itself after the 10 day period is up and you can enjoy the additional space it gives you.
