How to uninstall previous version of MSI installer?

The msi install creates and writes some files to [CommonApplicationData]//MyApp folder. During execution the application creates more files in [CommonApplicationData]//MyApp folder. During uninstall I need to delete all these files.

If you have access to the original MSI used for the installation, you can simply right click it in Windows Explorer and select Uninstall. As stated above you can do the same by command line: msiexec /x filename.msi /q 2. Using the ARP (Add/Remove Programs) Applet

Ironically I have discovered that, if I install the application by right_clicking on the setup project inside visual studio, and then choose “install”, the installer behaves correctly: it automatically detects and uninstalls the previous version, then installs the new version.

However, the old installation is not actually removed, only correctly overwritten. So problems arise if the user installs a new version choosing a different path. The correct behavior would be for the msi to to first uninstall the previous version, something I can’t see how to achieve. I was facing the same problem .

If you choose to “uninstall old first, install new version last”, the behavior of the MSI is simple and predictable. This behaves as if you had uninstalled the original application manually, then installed the new version. Any files that were installed in version 1 and that were not marked permanent will be removed.

MSI strips out all cabs (older Windows versions) and caches each MSI installed in a super hidden system folder at %SystemRoot%//Installer (you need to show hidden files to see it).
