In computing, DELTREE (short for delete tree) is a command line command in some Microsoft operating systems, SpartaDOS X and FreeDOS that recursively deletes an entire subdirectory of files.

Deltree syntax To delete one or more files and directories: DELTREE [/Y] [drive:]path [[drive:]path[…]] Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to delete the subdirectory. Specifies the name of the directory you want to delete. Use deltree cautiously.

Deltree is an external command that is available for the following Microsoft operating systems as deltree.exe. Users who are using Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 should utilize the del or rmdir command. Deletes a directory and all the subdirectories and files in it.

To delete directories with files or directories within them the user had to use the deltree command. It looks like Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 have an updated RD command with the /S option to basically merge both deltree and RD into one command.

There is no built-in way to delete files and directories as could be done with deltree. Using rdand delindividually is inconvenient at best because it requires distinguishing whether a file-system object (file-/folder-name) is a file or directory which is not always possible or practical.

Download Microsoft Deltree. Another tool you could use as an alternative to, or replacement for the Deltree command is a third party command line utility called Del3. It also has an advantage over deltree because it works perfectly fine on 64-bit systems although the .NET Framework 3 is required to use it.
