Are borders still changing?

Borders do occasionally shift in the modern world, but the circumstances vary and the rules are fuzzy. In general, the international community rejects the use of brute force and accepts revised boundaries that are mutually agreed upon.

The world’s oldest border is Andorra’s 120km border with France and Spain which was fixed in a feudal charter signed on 8 September 1278.

Borders are established through warfare, colonization, or simple symbiotic agreements between the political entities that reside in those areas; the creation of these agreements is called boundary delimitation.

A political boundary is an imaginary line separating one political unit, such as a country or state, from another. Sometimes these align with a natural geographic feature like a river to form a border or barrier between nations. Occasionally, two countries may contest where a particular border is drawn.

Borders are established through agreements between political or social entities that control those areas; the creation of these agreements is called boundary delimitation. Some borders—such as most state’s internal administrative border, or inter-state borders within the Schengen Area—are open and completely unguarded.

After the end of World War II Europe was divided between communist and non-communist controlled territory. Germany and its former capital Berlin was divided into French, American, British and Soviet sectors. Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania became republics within the Soviet Union.

Political boundaries are the dividing lines between countries, states, provinces, counties, and cities. These lines, more often called borders, are created by people to separate areas governed by different groups.

Geometric boundaries are formed by straight lines (such as lines of latitude or longitude), or occasionally arcs (Pennsylvania/Delaware), regardless of the physical and cultural features of the area. The Canada/US border along the 49th parallel is an example of a geometric boundary.

Along with mountains, oceans, seas, even deserts are examples of physical boundaries. For example, Africa is often referred to in terms of Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa, as in part of the desert or south of the desert.

They were also decided by wars and territory disputes. Straight lines were decided by officials in a room with a map, who did not have to fight between two groups to decide who got the land. They have often not seen the land. Irregular borders were often created over centuries of war, or defined by natural boundaries.
