RStudio as a text editor.

A text editor is simply a computer program and a tool used for editing plain text. An IDE, on the other hand, is a full-fledge software environment that consolidates basic developer tools required to build and test software.

The sub() function (short for substitute) in R searches for a pattern in text and replaces this pattern with replacement text. You use sub() to substitute text for text, and you use its cousin gsub() to substitute all occurrences of a pattern.

NotePad++ is not an IDE. It is an excellent text editor. I either use Npp or Atom A hackable text editor for the 21st Century for most of my coding. These are basic text editors and can provide simple functionality like code completion and search, reformat and lint etc.

Notepad++ provides indentation guides, particularly useful for Python which relies not on braces to define functional code blocks, but rather on indentation levels.

What are the best R IDEs? Many text editors have programmable macros, but since Vim is keyboard-based, your programmed macros are usually far more predictable and easier to understand. Text editing in vim is awesome, but it requires thinking about combinations of commands.

Cons: The list of commands is short and some may be unintuitive. Atom is a popular open-source code/text editor that works across several platforms such as Windows, Mac, or Linux. Atom is also considered to be one of the best Python code editors.
