What are axis tick marks?

A tick is a short line on an axis. For value axes, ticks mark the major divisions and show the exact point on an axis that the axis label defines. Ticks are always the same color and line style as the axis. Ticks come in two types: major and minor. Major ticks separate the axis into major units.

Add tick marks on an axis Click Add Chart Element > Axes > More Axis Options. On the Format Axis pane, expand Tick Marks, and then click options for major and minor tick mark types. After you add tick marks, you can change the intervals between the tick marks by changing the value in the Interval between marks box.

The selected axis properties appear in the Property Manager. There are two types of tick marks, major and minor.

Hatch marks (also called hash marks or tick marks) are a form of mathematical notation. They are used in three ways as: Unit and value marks — as on a ruler or number line. Congruence notation in geometry — as on a geometric figure.

William S. Cleveland, in his excellent book The Elements of Graphing Data , recommends that tick marks should point outwards ‘because ticks that point inward can obscure data’.

Tick marks are used to indicate a major or minor demarcation along an axis. For instance, if you have an axis that ranges from 0 to 1000, there may be major tick marks at every 100 in the range, and minor tick marks at every 50.

If you develop flu-like symptoms days or weeks after being bitten by a tick or notice that the skin surrounding a tick bite is becoming more swollen with enlarging areas of redness, it is time to visit a doctor for evaluation and possible treatment for Lyme disease.

Although the symptoms vary based on the type of tick and the disease it may be carrying, general signs to watch for include the following:

1. Mild itching.
2. Reddened area on the skin.
3. Very specific type of bulls-eye rash (EM) for Lyme.
4. Non-EM rash for other tick-related infections.
5. Fever.

Note 2: I read that the mark is called “tick mark” because it was used to mark the foreheads of people who died from bubonic plague, and the plague originated from ticks and fleas.

Tick marks provide reference for points on a scale. Each tick mark represents a specified number of units on a continuous scale, or the value of a category on a categorical scale. To represent a decimal on a number line, divide each segment of the number line into ten equal parts.

On the x-axis, there are four major tick marks (Number), starting with 0.5 (FirstTick) at an interval of 1.5 (TickInterval). There are three minor tick intervals (Density) between each major tick mark. The tick marks are twice as long and are drawn in the opposite direction as normal (TickLength).

Potential symptoms of tick-borne diseases include:

• a red spot or rash near the bite site.
• a full body rash.
• neck stiffness.
• a headache.
• nausea.
• weakness.
• muscle or joint pain or achiness.
• a fever.

Use the NMINOR subcommand to include one or more minor tick marks between consecutive major tick marks. For example, to display one minor tick mark between consecutive major tick marks on the x-axis of a scatterplot, use: Plot C1 * C2; Scale 1; LDisplay 1 1 1 1; NMinor 1.

Double-click the axis on which you want to display minor tick marks. Click the Show tab. Under Low, select Minor ticks. This adds the default number of minor tick marks between the major tick marks.

Remove axis ticks mark and text: p + theme (axis.text.x = element_blank (), axis.ticks = element_blank ()). Remove grid lines and customize axis lines. Manually label / rename tick marks and change the order of items in the plot for a discrete x axis.
