What is the TXT record in DNS?

TXT records are a type of Domain Name System (DNS) record that contains text information for sources outside of your domain. You add these records to your domain settings. You can use TXT records for various purposes. Google uses them to verify domain ownership and to ensure email security.

TXT records usually contain a lot of text and unlike other DNS records, the record can contain spaces and various special characters. Your provider will supply your records and the formatting is fairly straight forward with a long string of text which, goes in the answer section.

Multiple TXT records are completely legal per the DNS standards. Multiple TXT records implementing a specific standard can potentially be illegal, but only within the scope of that one standard.

Add a TXT record

1. Sign in to your domain’s account at your domain host.
2. Locate the page for updating your domain’s DNS records.
3. Locate the TXT records for your domain on this page.
4. Add a TXT record for the domain and for each subdomain (see “Use Cases” below).

A CNAME record cannot co-exist with another record for the same name. It’s not possible to have both a CNAME and TXT record for www.example.com . A CNAME can point to another CNAME, although this configuration is generally not recommended for performance reasons.

TXT records are commonly used for Google Verification. The TXT Value is what the record ‘points to’, but these records aren’t used to direct any traffic. Instead they’re used to provide needed information to outside sources.

Creating a TXT record Normally, you receive the full contents of the TXT record so you can easily copy it. Most importantly, the name of the entry must be correct. TXT records are usually given a specific subdomain name.

Add a TXT verification record (any domain host)

1. Sign in to your Google Admin console. Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).
2. Click Continue to verify your domain with a TXT record.
3. Look for your verification code in the setup tool and click Copy.

TTL: The ‘time to live’ value indicates the amount of time the record is cached by a DNS Server, such as your Internet service provider. The default (and lowest accepted) value is 14400 seconds (4 hours). You do not normally need to modify this value. Action: This allows you to modify or remove existing records.

What is a DNS TXT record? The DNS ‘text’ (TXT) record lets a domain administrator enter text into the Domain Name System (DNS). The TXT record was originally intended as a place for human-readable notes. However, now it is also possible to put some machine-readable data into TXT records.

The DNS lookup is done directly against the domain’s authoritative name servers, so changes to DNS TXT Records should show up instantly. DNS TXT records are commonly used for Sender Policy Framework (SPF) records or DKIM, but may serve other miscellaneous purposes as well.

A TXT record is a type of DNS entry so just like there are “A”, “CNAME, “PTR” and “MX” record types there is a “TXT” record type.
