In systems that use client‑side service discovery, clients query the service registry, select an available instance, and make a request. In systems that use server‑side discovery, clients make requests via a router, which queries the service registry and forwards the request to an available instance.

Service discovery is a technique for getting traffic from one container to another using the containers direct IP address, instead of an intermediary like a load balancer. It is suitable for a variety of use cases: Low latency communication between services. Long lived bidirectional connections, such as gRPC.

The alternative to client-side discovery decouples the service discovery and load balancing logic from the client. With server-side discovery, the client or API gateway simply passes the request, including the DNS name, to a router. In this case, the client or API gateway just needs to know the location of the router.

Service discovery is how applications and (micro)services locate each other on a network. Implementations include both a central server(s) that maintain a global view of addresses and clients that connect to the central server to update and retrieve addresses.
