Why do we put 0 after decimal?

The number 0 has one significant figure. Therefore, any zeros after the decimal point are also significant. Example: 0.00 has three significant figures. Any numbers in scientific notation are considered significant.

Remove trailing zeros from decimal numbers by Format Cells

1. Select the cells you want to remove trailing zeros after decimal point, right click to select Format Cells from the context menu.
2. In the Format Cells dialog, under Number tab, select Custom from Category list box, then type 0.
3. Click OK.

The decimal place accuracy of a number is the number of digits to the right of the decimal point. The decimal point is a period written between the digits of a number. If there is no decimal point, it is understood to be after the last digit on the right and there is no place (zero place) accuracy.

When we write 101.05 (say), the Zero after the Decimal still does not have any value by itself. It is still a place value holder to differentia. The number Zero is a symbol which does not have any value of itself either before or after the Decimal.

Zeros attached to the beginning of a number in this way are called leading zeros. In decimals, this idea of zeros that don’t add value to a number can be extended to trailing zeros. A trailing zero is any zero that appears to the right of both the decimal point and every digit other than zero.

Zero denotes actual information, just like any other number. You cannot tag on zeros that aren’t certain to belong there. 5. Trailing zeros in a whole number with the decimal shown ARE significant. Placing a decimal at the end of a number is usually not done.

They just tell you that your value ends with the last digit. Trailing zeros in decimal numbers are like leading zeros in whole numbers. Trailing zeros in whole numbers, though, are the opposite.

Any ending zeros, zeros at the end of a number, that are in the decimal portion of a number (meaning they are to the right of the decimal) can be dropped because they give no additional information. They are only changing the place value of the number, not the actual value.

When you see leading zeros to the left of a whole number, such as 0045, they can be ignored. The zeros are simply telling you that this particular number has no larger values. 0045 is the same as 45.
