MFA is active via the web and via mobile, but Outlook 2016 will not present the modern authentication screen when initially wiring up the MSA (using autodiscover, maybe manual would be different). The account can be configured, but it requires the use of an App Password.

Steps to Configure MFA with Outlook Client

1. Log in to portal.
2. Go to Active users.
3. On the drop-down button for More, select Multi-factor Authentication Setup.
4. Once you’re on the page, select the user that you want to enable the App Password and click the Enable button on the right side. This will prompt you to enable it.

You can set it up in the following way:

1. Log on to the Microsoft Account Management website.
2. At the top, click on: Security.
3. On the right, click on the link: More security options.
4. Verify your account via a security code when prompted.
5. Scroll down a bit and click on: Set up two-step verification.

Authentication works fine though. She is using a VLK for Office 2016 Pro Plus, and it doesnt work any any PC with this version installed. MFA is not enabled for this user.

The Office 365 MFA experience is behaving as expected. I’ve established MFA on the MSA and it’s functioning properly. MFA is active via the web and via mobile, but Outlook 2016 will not present the modern authentication screen when initially wiring up the MSA (using autodiscover, maybe manual would be different).

MS has told us this is a known bug with Windows 7 and Office 2016/2019 using MFA, but no solution yet. They’ve had me running enhanced logging, turning ‘EnableADAL’ on and off, etc, etc. If we get a real workaround that doesn’t involve logging in and out of other apps or disabling MFA, I’ll update.
