You must use Task Manager (Alt+Ctrl+Del on Windows) for kill process. Go to tab Processes, find process javaw.exe * and click End Process.

For newer versions of Eclipse:

1. open the Debug perspective (Window > Open Perspective > Debug)
2. select process in Devices list (bottom right)
3. Hit Stop button (top right of Devices pane)

If you’re having the same problem I had, then in eclipse you should be able to see a directory that is full of hundreds or thousands of text files. Eclipse will try to process them. To tell it not to, right click on the project, then click properties -> resource -> resource filters .

New! Simply use ALT + F2 . Then, type xkill and simply click on the window you need to force quit. This is very similar to the Force Quit Menu Way but doesn’t use a launcher.

4. close unused tabs in Java editor (yes it helps reducing Eclipse burden)
5. close unused projects.
6. disable unwanted label declaration (SVN/CVS)

Clicking ‘cancel’ pops up a little Cancel Requested message, but the operation still sits there forever blocking everything else. This is Eclipse Helios on Windows 7 if that makes any difference. Killing the task from the Progress window (Window->Show View->Other|General->Progress or Alt+Shift+Q, Q | General->Progress).

Since I don’t have a .snao or .prefs file in .metadata.plugins//org.eclipse.core.resources folder (running on OS X), what did the trick for me was copy the .project folder to old.project, start Eclipse, and check as proposed by matt b.

My issue was Eclipse hanging (on Windows) after a time ranging from a few moments to a few minutes after start-up. Looking at the log file, “workspace.metadata.log”, only pointed me in the wrong direction (removing random plugins pointed to by stack traces).
