How do I add a dependency in Visual Studio?

To assign dependencies to projects

1. In Solution Explorer, select a project.
2. On the Project menu, choose Project Dependencies.
3. On the Dependencies tab, select a project from the Project drop-down menu.
4. In the Depends on field, select the check box of any other project that must build before this project does.

To add a reference, right click on the References or Dependencies node in Solution Explorer and choose Add Reference. You can also right-click on the project node and select Add > Reference.

To add a file as a link, right click and choose Add > Existing Item… as before, but this time, don’t click the Add button. Instead, click the little dropdown arrow next to the Add button and select Add as Link. Instead of copying the file into the project directory, Visual Studio will create a link to the original.

1 Answer. The only difference between a “Project Reference Definition” and a “Project Dependency Definition” is the metadata that defines the output assembly inclusion/exclusion into/from the main project link command.

On the menu bar, choose File > New > Project to open the New Project dialog box. In the left pane of the New Project dialog box, select Installed > Visual C++ > Windows Desktop. In the center pane, select Dynamic-Link Library (DLL).

A project reference is a link from the current Studio project to another project. The reference makes certain resources in the referenced project become available for use in the current project.

1. In Solution Explorer, select files that you want to move from your source project to your target project.
2. Choose ReSharper > Refactor > Move. Here’s how the refactoring dialog looks like.

4. Make sure to keep “Fix namespaces” selected and apply the refactoring.

To link files, use the “Add Existing Item” dialog. One way of getting to this is to right-click on the project and choose “Add”, then “Existing Item…”. When the dialog opens, locate the file you want to link to. Then DO NOT CLICK THE “Add” BUTTON.

A: You can turn indicators off or on, except for the references indicator. Go to Tools, Options, Text Editor, All Languages, CodeLens. When the indicators are turned on, you can also open the CodeLens options from the indicators.

The syntax for the filename argument requires that paths that contain spaces use quotation marks. Auto-completion tries to locate the correct path and file name as you type. This command is not available while debugging.
