What are OLAP dimensions?

An OLAP cube is a multi-dimensional array of data. Online analytical processing (OLAP) is a computer-based technique of analyzing data to look for insights. The term cube here refers to a multi-dimensional dataset, which is also sometimes called a hypercube if the number of dimensions is greater than 3.

In 1975 the first OLAP product—Express was launched by Information Resources. This was the first multidimensional tool to support marketing related demands or application needs. It later on evolved into a hybrid OLAP after its acquisition by Oracle and has thrived for more than three decades.

How are OLAP cubes becoming outdated? OLAP cubes are also becoming outdated in other ways. Businesses across all sectors are demanding more from their reporting and analytics infrastructure within shorter business timeframes.

OLAP (online analytical processing) is a computing method that enables users to easily and selectively extract and query data in order to analyze it from different points of view.

The core of most OLAP systems, the OLAP cube is an array-based multidimensional database that makes it possible to process and analyze multiple data dimensions much more quickly and efficiently than a traditional relational database.

Snowflake is designed to be an OLAP database system. One of snowflake’s signature features is its separation of storage and processing: The data is stored in Amazon servers that are then accessed and used for analytics by processing nodes.

Self-service BI tools use a different technology than traditional OLAP tools supported by data warehouses. In particular, self-service tools use column-store data caches rather than OLAP data cubes. These data caches can be accessed in memory instead of reading from or writing to disk.

In theory, a cube can contain an infinite number of layers. (An OLAP cube representing more than three dimensions is sometimes called a hypercube.) And smaller cubes can exist within layers—for example, each store layer could contain cubes arranging sales by salesperson and product.

Common operations include slice and dice, drill down, roll up, and pivot. Slice is the act of picking a rectangular subset of a cube by choosing a single value for one of its dimensions, creating a new cube with one fewer dimension.

OLAP data is typically stored in a star schema or snowflake schema in a relational data warehouse or in a special-purpose data management system. Measures are derived from the records in the fact table and dimensions are derived from the dimension tables.
