Procedure

1. Open the messaging app (Messages or Anywhere)
2. Tap on the conversation with the Contact for which you want to set up a custom notification tone.

6. Choose a Sound, and then tap OK.

Not all apps provide for settings to change their sounds. You can also go to Settings>Notifications, then select the app in question. There should be a switch to turn sounds off/on, and if there is an ability to change the sound there, it can be done there, otherwise it would be within the app itself if allowed.

There is no way to customise the notification sound for 3rd party applications. However, if you wish to change the sound for apps built into the iPhone, you can do this by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Pathetic. Samsung Galaxy here I come asap. Apple have lost the plot. I really need this feature for my work.
