Calling the Command Line

1. If you installed with the Windows installer, the command line interface runs on .NET Framework. You can run it like any normal Windows console app: “%DOTFUSCATOR_HOME%/dotfuscator.exe”
2. If you installed with the NuGet package, the command line interface runs on .NET Core 2.1 or later.

Dotfuscator was developed by PreEmptive Solutions. A free version of the . NET Obfuscator, called the Dotfuscator Community Edition, is distributed as part of Microsoft’s Visual Studio. However, the current version is free for personal, non-commercial use only.

You can uninstall Dotfuscator Software Services – Community Edition from your computer by using the Add/Remove Program feature in the Window’s Control Panel. When you find the program Dotfuscator Software Services – Community Edition, click it, and then do one of the following: Windows Vista/7/8/10: Click Uninstall.

NET Compiler Platform, also known by its nickname Roslyn, is a set of open-source compilers and code analysis APIs for C# and Visual Basic (VB.NET) languages from Microsoft. The project notably includes self-hosting versions of the C# and VB.NET compilers – compilers written in the languages themselves.

Obfuscation in computer code uses complex roundabout phrases and redundant logic to make the code difficult for the reader to understand. The goal is to distract the reader with the complicated syntax of what they are reading and make it difficult for them to determine the true content of the message.

Dotfuscator employs advanced control flow obfuscation. In addition to adding code constructs, Dotfuscator works by destroying the code patterns that decompilers use to recreate source code. The end result is code that is semantically equivalent to the original but contains no clues as to how the code was originally written.

Dotfuscator will take the assemblies as input, perform the protection per your configuration settings, and generate protected versions of those assemblies as output. To get started using Dotfuscator Professional, first install it on your development machine.

It is important to understand that Dotfuscator is a “post-compile” tool – it protects.NET assemblies (.dll and.exe files) that you have already compiled. The development environment and tools do not change to accommodate protection, and source code is never altered, or even read, in any way.

See the Installation page for details. To begin using Dotfuscator Community from Visual Studio, type dotfuscator into the Quick Launch (Ctrl+Q) search bar. If Dotfuscator Community is already installed, Quick Launch brings up the Menu option to start the Dotfuscator Community user interface.
