How do I increase root volume in AWS?

Expand the root volume. Then, extend the file system using the Amazon EC2 console (new console)

1. From the Amazon EC2 console, choose Instances from the navigation pane.
2. Select the instance that you want to expand.
3. Select the volume.
4. In the Size field, enter the Size.
5. Choose Modify, and then choose Yes.

Expand the EBS root volume of EC2 Linux running on a current generation instance without detaching and reattaching the volume by using the Amazon EBS Elastic Volumes feature. To expand the EBS root volume of EC2 Linux running on a previous generation instance, you must detach and then reattach the volume.

Attach the volume to the new instance by following these steps:

1. Create a snapshot of the root volume.
2. Register a new AMI using the snapshot.
3. Launch a new instance from the new AMI.
4. Detach the remaining Amazon EBS volumes from the old instance.
5. Reattach the Amazon EBS volumes to the new instance.

Easiest thing to do is to add a second/new EBS volume to your existing/running EC2 instance, then you can either move some of the stuff that does not need to be on the primary volume to the second volume, or else if possible redirect the new data coming in to the newly added volume.

Decrease the size of EBS volume in your EC2 instance

1. Snapshot the volume.
2. Create a new smaller EBS volume.
3. Attach the new volume.
4. Format the new volume.
5. Mount the new volume.
6. Copy data from old volume to the new volume.
7. Prepare the new volume.
8. Detach and unmount old volume.

AWS EC2 Root Device Volume. When an EC2 instance is launched from an AMI, the root device volume contains the image used to boot the instance—mainly the operating system, all the configured services, and applications.

You can specify the volume size from 10 GiB (the default) up to 100 GiB when you create a cluster using the AWS Management Console, the AWS CLI, or the Amazon EMR API. This sizing applies only to the EBS root device volume and applies to all instances in the cluster.
